11 May Between sea and land

Roughed by time and scorched by the sun, decayed and aged by the persistency of the everlasting tides, here lies an elderly fishing port, tired, wrinkled, punctuated by a long silver beard and grey watery eyes.

For decades that its skyscraper legs and crackling torso bear the weary load of fishermen’s feet, semi-shredded ropes and improvised buoys, granting the access to boats, even during low tide, over the mudflats.

It’s a mystical space, a border between the toil at sea and the ploughing of the land, a stilted pier submerged in ancient wisdom and practical know-how, with pathways patch worked by wooden boards and humble sheds that safeguard a daily bread way of living.

When I stood still on one of those ramshackle boards for the first time, listening to the soft sound of the estuary waves coming and going, I had this schizophrenic feeling of eternity intermingled with the inconstancy and fickleness.

The freshness of the moist air climbed through my sleeves and made me shiver a little, but my eyes just kept gazing at the amazing hues of maritime inspiration that every plank and boat breathed out. Layer of paint above layer of paint, new trying to erase the old, gayness surpassing exhaustion, texture resisting texture.

Everywhere I saw the iridescence of fish scales and oysters shells – turquoise against turquoise, silver against grey, white against silence -, a confluence of structures born out of the necessity of men and women with the rhythmic movement of Sado River, driven into a natural reserve, deepened till the knees, stuck there for the times to come.

Thank you! We love that part of the country too 😀 The food is awesome – arroz de lingueirão :-d is my favourite -, the scenery is breathtaking and I can still remember the day I was laying on the sand of a local beach, breathing in the horizon, when suddenly a group of dolphins emerged against the backdrop! Wow!
